Echocardiography (ECHO) Test in Gurgaon

Echocardiography (ECHO) Test in Gurgaon

About Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram (echo=sound + card=heart + gram=drawing) is an ultrasound test that can evaluate the structures of the heart, as well as the direction of blood flow within it. Cardiologists specially trained in echocardiography produce the images and videos, often using a special probe or transducer that is placed in various places on the chest wall, to view the heart from different directions and evaluate these images to assess heart function and provide a report of the results. The echocardiogram is just one of the many tests that can be done to evaluate heart anatomy and function.

When Echo-cardiogram is required?

Your doctor may order an echocardiogram for several reasons. For example, they may have discovered an abnormality from other testing or while listening to your heartbeat through a stethoscope. If you have an irregular heartbeat, your doctor may want to inspect the heart valves or chambers or check your heart’s ability to pump. They may also order one if you’re showing signs of heart problems, such as chest pain or shortness of breath.

Risks of Echocardiogram

Echocardiograms are considered very safe. Unlike other imaging techniques, such as X-rays, echocardiograms don’t use radiation. A transthoracic echocardiogram carries no risk.

Echocardiogram Preparation

1. Dress Comfortably: Wear relaxed, airy attire on your testing day. You could be requested to change into a hospital gown because the technician might need to view your chest area.

2. Eating and Drinking: Depending on what kind of echocardiogram you will have, you might have certain restrictions when it comes to eating and drinking.

          1. Transthoracic Echocardiogram (TTE): This is one of the most common types of echocardiograms. In this type of echocardiogram, you can eat and drink normally before the test.

          2. Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE): If you will have a TEE, you should avoid all food and drink approximately 6-8 hours before the test.

          3. Stress Echocardiogram: Your doctor may instruct you not to consume any caffeine or eat a heavy meal within 24 hours of your procedure.

Follow your doctor's recommendations regarding preparation for your echocardiogram.

3. Use Medications as Directed: It is usually okay to continue your regular medications. If you have been scheduled for an echocardiogram, your doctor may recommend withholding certain heart medications for a short time before the test.

Remember to provide your doctor with:

         1. A list of all medicines you are taking regularly.

         2. A history of all allergies.

         3. Any pre-existing medical conditions.

4. No Lotions or Oily Substances on Your Chest Before the Exam: Avoid putting any lotions/oils/powders on your chest prior to your test. They can make it hard for the ultrasound probe to see your heart, resulting in lower-quality images.

5. Bring Past Medical Records: If you have ever had heart tests (ECG, heart report, MRI), bring those with you to the visit, as they will help the physician correlate test results and evaluate your overall cardiac health with reference to past results.

It is used to check the heart’s structure, pumping ability, valves, and blood flow.

No. ECG records the heart’s electrical activity, while an echocardiogram uses ultrasound to show images of the heart.

An echocardiogram cannot directly show artery blockage, but may detect reduced heart function caused by blocked arteries.

A normal report shows a healthy heart size, proper valve function, and a normal pumping efficiency (usually EF 55–70%).

It usually refers to an ejection fraction (EF) of 45%, indicating mildly reduced heart pumping function.

Valve problems, heart muscle weakness, enlarged heart chambers, congenital heart defects, and fluid around the heart.

A good ejection fraction (EF) is typically between 55% and 70%.

It may show weak heart pumping, valve disease, enlarged heart chambers, or abnormal blood flow.

It shows an ejection fraction of 65%, which is considered a normal and healthy heart function.

Low ejection fraction, valve leakage or narrowing, thick heart muscle, enlarged chambers, or fluid around the heart.
