Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

Overview

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection that can affect the female reproductive organs, including the uterus, Fallopian tubes, or ovaries. PID is typically caused by sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like gonorrhea and chlamydia. It can also be caused by other bacteria, such as E. coli. The symptoms of pelvic infection include lower abdominal pain, fever, vaginal discharge, painful urination, and painful intercourse.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the infection. Some females may experience mild symptoms, while others may experience chronic symptoms.

Common pelvic infection symptoms include:

  • Pain and Tenderness in the Lower Abdomen: The pain and tenderness in the lower are the most common PID symptoms. The pain may be constant or intermittent and it may be sharp or dull.

  • Fever: A fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher is a sign of infection.

  • Abnormal Vaginal Discharge: The abnormal vaginal discharge, which may have a foul odor, is also a common sign of pelvic inflammatory disease. It can be thick, yellow, or green.

  • Painful Urination: The sharp pain while urinating may be caused by urethral or bladder inflammation.

  • Painful Intercourse: The pain during intercourse is caused by inflammation of the cervix or vagina.

  • Heavy Menstrual Bleeding: Heavy bleeding during menstrual period may be caused by inflammation of the uterus.

  • Nausea and Vomiting: Nausea and vomiting symptoms may be caused by inflammation of the stomach or intestines.

If you experience all or any of the above-mentioned symptoms, it is important to consult a doctor for pelvic disease treatment near you for diagnosis of the problem and start treatment early to prevent serious complications.

The PID causes can be bacteria, fungi, or parasites. But the most common pelvic infections causes are sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Gonorrhea and chlamydia are the two most common STIs that can spread through sexual contact and cause PID.

In addition to the previously mentioned causes, other factors lead to PID such as:

  • Instrumentation: Insertion of instruments into the uterus or fallopian tubes during a pelvic examination or abortion, can also cause PID.

  • Ectopic pregnancy: An ectopic pregnancy is another cause of pelvic inflammatory disease. The ectopic pregnancy occurs outside of the womb. If ruptures, it can cause PID.

  • An intrauterine device (IUD): An IUD is a type of birth control that is inserted into the uterus. It can increase the risk of pelvic infection, especially in women who have multiple sexual partners.

  • Weakened immune system: Females with a weakened immune system are more likely to develop PID.

If you suspect you have PID, it’s crucial to consult a doctor for diagnosis and initiate PID disease treatment to prevent serious complications.

No single test can diagnose the PIDs. The doctor typically relies on patients’ medical history. Because the symptoms of PID are similar to other conditions, such as a urinary tract infection or a yeast infection. As a result, doctors may recommend a few tests to diagnose the PID including:

  • Medical History: Your doctor will ask you about your sexual habits, history of sexually transmitted infections method of birth control, and symptoms you are experiencing.

  • Pelvic exam: A pelvic examination is used to examine the pelvis organs such as the vagina, cervix, uterus, Fallopian tubes, and ovaries for signs of infection such as tenderness and swelling.

  • Blood and Urine tests: Blood and Urine tests are used to test for pregnancy, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), or other sexually transmitted infections. These tests are also used to find out the signs of infection, such as elevated white blood cell count.

  • Cervical swab: A cervical swab is used to collect bacteria from the cervix for testing.

  • Ultrasound: An ultrasound is used to create images of reproductive organs such as the uterus, Fallopian tubes, and ovaries.

There are several things that you may do to help prevent pelvic inflammatory disease (PID):

  • Get vaccinated against sexually transmitted infections: The HPV vaccine can help protect against some sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like HPV and gonorrhea which can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease.

  • Limit your sex partner: If you have multiple sex partners, then you are at high risk of developing STIs. By limiting your sex partner, you can prevent the likelihood of developing Pelvic inflammatory disease.

  • Avoid douching: Douching can upset the balance of bacteria in the vagina and make it easier for STIs to spread. So, by avoiding douching you can prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections.

  • Get regular STI testing: If you are sexually active, it is necessary to get regular STI testing to diagnose and treat any STIs early on.

  • If you have an intrauterine device (IUD), then consult your doctor: Intrauterine devices (IUDs) can increase the risk of PID, so it is important to discuss the risks and potential treatments with your doctor if you have an IUD.

There are various risk factors for Pelvis Inflammatory Diseases including:

  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

  • Multiple sexual partners

  • Young age

  • Use of intrauterine device

  • Ectopic pregnancy

  • Weakened immune system

  • Instrumental procedures

If you have any or all of these risk factors, it is important to consult your doctor for pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) treatment to reduce the risk of developing pelvic inflammatory disease.
